Wednesday: poetry potlatch

Tonight we will be having a vegan / vegetarian potlatch commencing at 7pm. In addition we ask that attendees bring poetry they admire to share with the group. The poetry portion begins at 8pm. Our kitchen is available for those whose scheduling constraints do not allow them to cook at home.

NB. I spell as"potlatch" what is customarily "potluck" to underline the connection with the Pacific Northwest ceremonial discussed in Marcel Mauss' Essai sur le don (The Gift). Mauss outlines his hypothesis of the gift economy as distinct from the exchange economy to which most of us are accustomed. When we work to establish miniature gift economies in our lives and communities we are also altering, even if only slightly, social conditions which are taken for granted.

Cold weather and holiday plans clearly kept many people home tonight. However we had two guests at 7pm, with whom we shared chili, a spicy rice dish, cookies, popcorn and tea. The second wave of three people arrived at about 10pm. No poetry was read but we played old blues, which is at least as good.

We have formally decided to begin reading the ancient historians, beginning with Herodotus, at 2pm on Thursdays. Let us know if you are interested!
